March Reminiscence

On March 5, 2007, grateful for a little sunshine after some sleety weather, I scribbled a couple of verses on a scrap of notepaper. Found them while sorting through a heap of papers last night.

Sunlit Jonquil

The day's small gift: a brilliant jonquil, lifting
Its sunny head beneath a clearing sky,
Beside the bricks where sleet and snow are drifting --
To chilly silver light, a warm reply.

The jonquil keeps the rainbow for its own --
At least, the bands of violet and of red --
But bounces every gold and yellow tone,
While, from the filtered sun, its leaves are fed.
