Cocooning with Cats

Recently I noticed a satirical tweet which said that, if there were no women, cats would be out of a job. I sort of doubt there was any empirical evidence to support that assertion, although it's true that old ladies who keep cats have been a stereotype for as long as I can remember. But the tweet did set me thinking about my cats and me. And I came up with the following verses:

Cocooning with Cats

Somehow I feel safer with cats in the house –
Their goals seem to match up with mine.
They want a routine,
Plus they want the place clean
(Of vermin at least) or they'll whine.

My cats are quite old and they seldom carouse
When others are trying to sleep.
A little fresh food
And they're soon in the mood
To curl up and purr for their keep.

Although we make do with but informal vows,
We renew them when dangers appear.
And they're always alert
To share my dessert,
Just as I am to keep my cats near.
